Open Day travel guide

Both our Whiteknights and London Road campuses are open on the day.

Our Whiteknights campus is the main hub for our Open Day activities and most visitors should head straight there.

If you’re interested in studying architecture, education or teaching, we recommend you start your day on our London Road campus, which is home to the School of Architecture and Institute of Education, before heading to Whiteknights for the other activities.

We have a limited number of parking spaces on our campus, therefore parking is reserved for those who requested it at the point of booking. Your confirmation email will confirm whether you selected parking or not.

Travelling to Reading by train

Reading train station is a mainline train station and is easily accessible from most other places in the UK.

There are direct rail lines from many major cities, including Birmingham, Manchester, Cardiff, Bristol and Exeter, as well as a number of routes through London.

Once you arrive at Reading station our team of Open Day Ambassadors will be ready to greet you and assist you in catching the bus to campus. A free shuttle bus from the station to the University will be provided for our Open Day visitors.

Great Western Rail (GWR) are offering a 20% discount for our Open Day visitors travelling on 20 and 21 June. This discount can be used in combination with the 16-17 and 16-25 young person's railcards. To access the discount please book your tickets on the GWR website.

Please note that the offer is for single advance fares on selected routes only (as identified by GWR) and there is a limited availability.

Bursary for train travel

If you're from IMD or WIMD Q1 postcodes around the UK, we can now offer free train tickets for you and an accompanying person.

What is IMD and WIMD?

The Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) 2015 is the official measure of relative deprivation for small areas (or neighbourhoods) in England.

Areas are split into quintiles, with quintile 1 (Q1) for highest levels of deprivation and quintile 5 (Q5) for lowest levels of deprivation.

There is a similar measure for Wales called the Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation (WIMD).

How do I claim my free train tickets?

When you complete your Open Day booking form, enter your postcode and select "public transport" when asked how you will travel to the Open Day. We will then check your postcode and contact you to set up the free train tickets.

If you have any questions, please contact us at opendays@reading.ac.uk.

Travelling to the University by bus

The easiest way to get to the University of Reading on Open Days is by public transport.

For your convenience, we've arranged a shuttle bus service for Open Day visitors, running between Reading station and our campuses throughout the day (08:30–17:05). The shuttle will stop at London Road campus before continuing on to the main Whiteknights campus.

Our friendly staff and student ambassadors will be on hand at the station to guide you to the bus stops.

Travelling to the University by car

Our Whiteknights and London Road campuses are easy to reach by car. They are approximately 1.5 miles from the M4 motorway.
