Discover the artist in you through professional practice, experimenting with different media and taking part in exhibitions. At Reading you will benefit from a combination of art practice, contemporary theory and history.
Explore painting, sculpture (such as welding and casting) and printmaking, examine the exciting potential of new technologies and produce some new and emerging art forms at Reading School of Art.
Reading School of Art is partnered with the Tate Exchange and specialises in contemporary art. We believe that emerging and innovative art practices forge new audiences and users. Our teaching staff are artists, curators and researchers of international standing who are actively involved in the art world.
- 97% of our research is of international standing (REF 2021, combining 4*, 3* and 2* submissions – Art and Design: History, Practice and Theory; Art)
- 100% of our research impact has been classed as ‘outstanding’ or ‘very considerable’ (REF 2021, combining 4* and 3* submissions – Art and Design: History, Practice and Theory; Art).
Debate and constructive criticism are actively encouraged and you will openly discuss your work with peers and teaching staff. You'll benefit from daily contact with supportive tutors, available every day during term time for tutorials and technical advice, as well as access to a high-profile network of practicing artists and curators.
You will receive your own dedicated studio space, accessible 24 hours a day and seven days a week. These spaces are a creative, lively and stimulating environment in which to practise, with all years sharing the same area. There is a high level of activity in the studios, with regular events, screenings, performances and exhibitions. A student-run gallery and experimental project spaces are also available.
We work with national and international museums, galleries and collections, allowing you to consider the diverse conditions in which art is displayed and received and to gain real-world experience through industry placements. There are also many opportunities for you to apply to study abroad: Reading School of Art has links with universities in countries such as the USA, Canada, Australia, Taiwan, France, Switzerland and Finland.
Our range of single honours and joint courses will equip you with the knowledge, intellectual ability and the practice-led skills you will need to make an imaginative and effective contribution to the art world. Follow in the footsteps of some of our alumni and become Turner Prize-nominated artists or world-leading curators.
