Mackinder Hall offers comfortable premium self-catered rooms a short distance from the University's academic buildings. Rooms include fitted furniture and a range of storage, including under-bed storage.

Please note Mackinder Hall will be undergoing planned building enhancement works during academic year 2025/26. Compensation will be applied to rooms impacted at a rate of 5% or 10% where relevant. 

The current programme of works commences 28 July 2025 and is scheduled through to the end of summer 2026.

Students with specific requirements

Single-sex accommodation

Single-sex areas are available at Mackinder Hall. Single-sex university accommodation means sharing a flat (not a room) with other students of the same sex.

Please be aware in either male or female single-sex accommodation, guests (including overnight guests) may be of a different sex. Visiting staff members (cleaners, maintenance staff etc.) may also be of a different sex.

Accommodation Guarantee

Prospective students are guaranteed a place in halls if they are:

  • A new full-time undergraduate who holds Reading as a Firm UCAS choice and applies for accommodation by 1 August** and satisfies any conditions of their academic offer by 3 September 2026.
  • A new full-time postgraduate who has accepted an offer from the University and applies for accommodation by 1 August** and satisfies any conditions of their academic offer by 3 September 2026.
