More information on research at Reading

The University of Reading is home to the world-famous Climate Stripes. We are also key contributors to the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report, and co-designers of the European Flood Awareness System.

At a time of unprecedented environmental change, our mission is to deliver the knowledge and solutions to reduce and, where possible, reverse environmental damage, build resilience, and enable effective adaptation.

Through pioneering research, cross-disciplinary collaboration, and strategic partnerships with business, government and civil society, we transform science into positive societal impact.

How we make a difference

Our researchers solve real-world problems, making a positive impact that brings benefits for generations to come.

Working Together

We collaborate with the very best researchers and users of research, nationally and internationally. Together, we create tangible environmental solutions that drive real change.

We work closely with organisations such as:

  • Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), including hosting parts of the NERC-funded National Centre for Atmospheric Science (NCAS) and the National Centre for Earth Observation (NCEO).
  • The Met Office – we are a member of the Met Office Academic Partnership and around 25 Met Office staff are based at the University as part of MetOffice@Reading.
  • The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) and World Meteorological Organization.
  • The Natural History Museum, through our strategic research partnership.
  • The United Nations, including the UN Environment Programme and UN Development Programme.
  • UK Government Departments, including Defra, Department for Science, Innovation & Technology, Department for Energy Security & Net Zero and Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office.
  • Agencies of the European Union, including the European Environment Agency and the European Space Agency.
  • Charities and non-profits including the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre and the Wellcome Trust.
