Our BSc Real Estate with Foundation degree gives you an understanding of the breadth and depth of the property sector and allows you to make specialist choices later in the course.

This four-year programme includes a foundation year that leads directly into the three-year BSc Real Estate course.

Foundation year

The foundation year will provide you with the skills and knowledge to succeed at university. You’ll develop core skills in academic study, writing and research.

Your learning will be delivered through a combination of lectures, tutorials, practical classes and workshops.

A foundation year is more than just a stepping-stone to a degree. You will also benefit from:

  • access to our full range of facilities and resources
  • full integration into university life, before your degree year begins
  • experience of an academic environment, and the ability to work independently
  • specialist support and guidance.

After successful completion of your foundation year, you’ll progress onto our three-year BSc Real Estate degree.

Real Estate and Planning at the University of Reading ranks 1st in the UK for Land and Property Management (Complete University Guide, 2025). Our staff are world leaders in their fields and you can expect to be taught by internationally renowned experts, with a wealth of academic and professional experience.

In the first two foundation years you will build a strong understanding of the core subject areas of economics, finance, business management, planning, building, law and valuation which you can then apply to complex problems in the real world. In year three, you will develop a deeper understanding in a specialist area, such as development and planning, investment or valuation. You can also tailor your degree by choosing from a range of elective modules including housing or rural options.

Throughout this programme you will apply your knowledge to real-life projects and case studies. This will develop your understanding of the links between subjects and, equally importantly, your presentation, writing and team-working skills.

This programme has full accreditation from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.

Through our alumni association, the Reading Real Estate Foundation, we are in touch with more than 5000 of our graduates. Many are actively involved with REP as mentors for our current students, hosting site visits or coming to the University as guest lecturers.

Career Development

We have a professional Careers Development Adviser who will help you with every aspect of the career development process, including identifying work placements, internships and permanent career opportunities.

You'll benefit from individual advice on the preparation of CVs and application letters and attend workshops on the interview process. You will also have the opportunity to take our work-based learning module, enabling you to gain credits towards your degree from relevant work experience undertaken while at university.
