An exciting four-year pre-registration degree for students who wish to qualify as speech and language therapists. This clinically focused programme prepares you for professional practice through a blend of academic learning and real-world experience.
BSc Language Sciences and Psychology
If you’re interested in the science of communication and the human mind, but don’t necessarily want to become an SLT, this flexible course offers a broader pathway through language and psychology.

Speech and language therapists (SLTs) assess and treat people with speech, language and communication problems. They also help people who have difficulty eating or swallowing. SLTs work in a range of settings, including:
- hospitals
- schools
- community
- health centres
- clients' homes.
A research-led learning experience
We are a research-led School, with academic staff actively engaged in world-class research across a variety of areas, including:
- Down syndrome
- child development
- linguistics and psychology
- language development and pathology
- bilingualism and multilingualism.
Our research directly informs our teaching, giving you access to the latest thinking and discoveries that shape real-world practice. Many of our lecturers are also practising speech and language therapists, giving you a direct insight into the latest developments in clinical practice.
Practical learning in our in-house clinic
From day one, you’ll gain hands-on experience in our purpose-built NHS speech and language therapy clinic, which supports both adult and paediatric clients with a wide range of speech, language, and communication needs.
You’ll take part in all aspects of day-to-day clinic work, including:
- telephone triage
- client assessment and therapy
- running training workshops observing and treating children and adults, all under the supervision of experienced speech and language therapists.
You'll also benefit from access to outstanding practical facilities, including:
- observational suites
- dedicated speech research laboratory
- sound recording room.
