If you are planning on coming to the UK to study, and you don't have British A level qualifications or the equivalent, the International Foundation Programme (IFP) offers you the opportunity to prepare for an undergraduate degree at a British university. There are two entry points for the IFP, one in September and one in January.
At the University of Reading Global Academy, we have 100 years of experience in international education, and we provide world-class teaching, cultural insight, and ongoing personalised support.
Our International Foundation Programme (IFP) prepares you for undergraduate study at the University of Reading, including prestigious degree programmes at Henley Business School and most other undergraduate degrees across the University. Henley Business School is proud to be one of a selection of global business schools in the world to hold the prestigious Triple Crown accreditation, awarded by the three leading international business school accrediting bodies: the Association of MBAs (AMBA), the European Foundation for Management Development (EQUIS), and the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).
We welcome students from many different countries and backgrounds. You will study in an international learning environment that encourages respect for different perspectives and experiences.
What you will learn

Study on one of three pathways on the International Foundation Programme at the University of Reading Global Academy, to guarantee the opportunity of a place* on an undergraduate degree course at the University of Reading.
If you already know the subject you wish to study at undergraduate level, we offer a range of four-year undergraduate degrees that include an integrated International Foundation Year.
*On successful completion of the IFP, you are guaranteed the opportunity of a place on your chosen degree at Reading, if you meet the progression requirements set out by the University departments for their degrees.
The International Foundation Programme (IFP) is a University-led foundation programme and is subject to the same quality and assessment procedures as the rest of our courses and programmes. We have taught the IFP for more than 40 years and have an international reputation for excellence in both our teaching and the support we provide our students. You can apply for scholarships to help fund your time here, and if you are aged 17 or over, you will be eligible for a place in halls on our award-winning campus.
What you will learn
The International Foundation Programme (IFP) is divided into three pathways:
- Science and Mathematics Pathway
- Business, Management and Finance Pathway
- Social Sciences and Arts Pathway
The pathway you study depends on the undergraduate degree you plan to progress to after your foundation year.
Within your pathway, you will study subject-specific modules that are closely aligned with your chosen degree. Alongside these modules, you will also study the compulsory Introduction to Academic Skills and Communication and Further Academic Skills and Communication modules. These modules will help you develop the academic and English language skills needed to succeed at a UK university.
The compulsory modules on the IFP are provided by the University of Reading Global Academy and taught by subject specialist lecturers.
How you will learn
The IFP includes at least 18 hours of classroom-based teaching each week. Your timetable will be based on the combination of modules you study.
You will be taught by experienced academics using teaching approaches that are similar to those used on the undergraduate degree you plan to study. Teaching sessions may include lectures, seminars, workshops, practical laboratory classes, and individual tutorials. You will experience a range of learning activities, including active learning, group projects, independent study, presentations, digital technologies, problem-solving, and case-study-based activities.
Assessment methods vary depending on the modules you study. They may include presentations, essays, reflective assignments, laboratory reports, examinations, portfolios, and other forms of assessment..
How you will be supported
You will receive support throughout your time at the University, from before you arrive until after you graduate. This includes:
- a STaR (Student Transition at Reading) Mentor: an International Foundation Programme graduate who is matched with you before you arrive and is available to answer your questions
- a designated Academic Tutor: a lecturer in the Global Academy who will support and guide you throughout your studies from your first day
- full access to the University's communities, societies, and library, helping you to settle into university life and feel part of the University community from the beginning.
