Structure

  • Modules

Core modules:

Investigating Education

Gain an overview of approaches to research in education. You will learn how to understand and evaluate research studies and develop a critical approach to research design and methods.

Analysing Research Data in Education

Develop the practical knowledge that will allow you to analyse data collection from education related research. You will also be equipped with the skills to understand and evaluate a variety of quantitative and qualitative data analysis methods, and to independently carry out a small-scale empirical research study for your dissertation.

Dissertation

Produce a high-quality piece of independent work in a chosen area of study. You will develop a range of skills that will help you identify and define a research topic and apply appropriate techniques to collect original data.

Optional modules

Future Leaders in Education

Learn the tools needed to critically evaluate policy and practice and develop models of sustainable leadership in education. You will examine different policy agendas and institutional approaches, and reflect upon the views of a range of ‘expert witnesses’ with varying levels of educational or political authority.

Families and Learning

Gain a theoretical understanding of issues relevant to the topic of families and learning. You will study theoretical models, including different family systems, attachment and parenting styles, and feminist research in mother/teaching. As you study these family dynamics, you will become acquainted with sociological research in the field of families and education.

Educating Diverse Groups

Study the diverse groups that are seen in schools and settings, such as children with various physical disabilities or disorders. You will explore the theoretical basis for inclusion and consider what practical effect this has in a classroom, as well as the impact of diverse groups in society.

The Creative Educator

Explore the value of creativity in education and how it can manifest and be facilitated in different disciplines. You will work through practice-based approaches in the arts to develop and challenge possible educational futures. Drawing on research, practice and social debates around creativity, imagination and cultural integrity, this module considers the psychological significance of creativity in education.

These are the modules that we currently offer for 2024/2025 entry. They may be subject to change as we regularly review our module offerings to ensure they’re informed by the latest research and teaching methods.

Please note that the University cannot guarantee that all optional modules will be available to all students who may wish to take them.

Introduction to MA Education

What's it like studying an MA in Education?

The MA Ed gave me a thorough understanding of the fundamental issues and debates in education. It has given me a depth of knowledge I simply did not have before, and with it a stronger sense of judgement, which is crucial in any educator.
