University Community Champions

Become a University Community Champion and play an important role in supporting the University of Reading through the promotion of its activity, events and information relevant to our local community.  


As a University of Reading Champion, you will share events, projects, and activities that are relevant to our local community. You will also gather and share feedback from our community and report them during bi-annual meetings with the Community Engagement Manager and the Vice-Chancellor.

The role of University Community Champion is completely voluntary, and it will normally require about one hour per month of your time. However, you can commit to doing as much or as little as you want, according to what works best for you.

When you sign up to become a University Community Champion you will be added to a mailing list to easily receive digital and/or physical information that can be shared with your community.

We want to ensure that being a University Community Champion is an enjoyable and accessible role and we also recognise that life changes, so you are welcome at any point to step away from the role.

Who are we looking for?

Anyone within our local community can become a University Community Champion, regardless of their role or experience, as long as they are:

  • enthusiastic about wanting to share the University’s community related activity locally
  • interested in building positive relationships between the University and the local community
  • connected to their community – for example through volunteering, working for a local business, being active within your neighbourhood, or being a local trustee, governor, or councillor
  • understanding of the needs and interests of their community and how the University may be able to support it in addressing its challenges.

How does this benefit you?

We want to ensure that you are recognised for being a Community Champion and benefit from this role by:

  • being named on a dedicated University Community Champion page on the University website, improving your visibility and that of the local organisation or business you might be a part of
  • receiving a digital and physical badge to share that you are a University Community Champion
  • being one of the first people to find out about University events, activity, projects or funding that could benefit your community
  • demonstrating your skills and experience of excellent communication, strength at building relationships and working in partnership with the University
  • having a direct point of contact with the Vice-Chancellor, Community Engagement Manager and other key University colleagues to share feedback that could directly benefit the community or organisation you are part of
  • connecting with other University Community Champions through informal networking opportunities who may be able to support your community or organisation.
