  • Modules

Compulsory modules

Theoretical Approaches and Contemporary Challenges in Archaeology

Explore the different approaches to archaeological theory as you compare their strengths, weaknesses and relevance. You’ll articulate complex arguments on approaches to subjects such as gender and identity, sustainability and global challenges, examining the inferences archaeologists make on human behaviour of the past and tackling how archaeology can help build a better future.

Dissertation

Embark on an independent project that critically evaluates current problems at the forefront of archaeological method and theory. You’ll evaluate primary and published sources, analyse primary data, and potentially conduct original archaeological fieldwork.

Optional modules

Managing Archaeological Projects: From Inception to Publication

Develop your own 'toolkit' of professional skills to set up and run your own archaeological project. You'll examine industry standards in project design, funding, fieldwork, post-excavation analyses, reporting, dissemination, and archiving.  Through lectures, workshops and a field trip with the Department's Field School Director, you'll design your own project and write a site report using original data.

Research and Enterprise Placement

Apply your academic skills within a research placement and/or enterprise environment. You'll gain hands-on experience with grant applications and business proposals as you develop your own project.

Theory and Practice in Human Bioarchaeology

Examine the main theoretical and methodological approaches and conceptual frameworks in human bioarchaeology in structured introductory sessions, discussions and practicals.

Scientific Advances: Reconstructing the Past

Gain insights into how scientific advances are enhancing our understanding of past human behaviour and environment.  Learn first-hand from leaders in the Department's science research groups in materials science, environment and proteomics (ancient proteins).  You will be taught through lectures, guided laboratory visits and handling of archaeological material.

Deep Time Archaeology: Understanding 'Prehistoric' Societies

Trace key transformations in human-environment interactions, technologies, creation of communities, ritual practices, and cultural interactions from the Palaeolithic to the origins of agriculture and the Bronze Age.  Learn through new comparative approaches, global case studies with a focus on Europe and South West Asia, lectures, seminars and a museum visit with specialists in each of these periods.

Beyond the Written Word: Archaeological Perspectives on Historical Societies

Examine issues and debates in historical archaeology, comparing and contrasting three key periods and regions: Mesopotamia, Rome and the medieval period. Learn the value of integrating archaeological and textual evidence on key themes such as climate and sustainability, urbanism, bureaucratic systems, cultural interactions and religion and beliefs.

These are the modules that we currently offer for 2026/27 entry. They may be subject to change as we regularly review our module offerings to ensure they’re informed by the latest research and teaching methods.

Please note that the University cannot guarantee that all optional modules will be available to all students who may wish to take them.

The lectures and seminars were engaging and thought-provoking. The staff were very good at explaining things and I found the learning process was organised very professionally.
