The MSc Psychology Conversion at the University of Reading is ideal for those with an undergraduate degree in another discipline who wish to pursue a career in psychology.

We offer a modern, evidence-based introduction to psychology, covering core disciplines such as:

  • development in typical and atypical populations
  • neuroscience
  • perception
  • cognition social psychology
  • differential psychology.

You can complement your studies with optional modules that align with the University of Reading’s strengths in research and clinical psychology, including evidence-based treatments or a research placement.

Our seminars and assessments are designed specifically for graduates from other disciplines. We also offer support sessions in statistics and employability skills for conversion students.

Entry requirements

IELTS: 6.5 overall with no element less than 5.5.

Entry requirements: Typically a good undergraduate honours degree (2:1 or above). You will need to demonstrate your interest in studying psychology.

Pre-sessional English language Programme

Our Pre-sessional English Programme is for international students who need to meet their degree programme English language requirements.

Our courses equip you with the skills and language needed for academic success, including critical thinking, self-reflection, learner autonomy, research skills and integrating sources. The Pre-sessional English Programme is accredited by the British Association of Lecturers in English for Academic Purposes (BALEAP), which guarantees you will receive a high-quality student experience.

Structure

  • Year 1

Compulsory modules

Research Methods and Data Analysis

Gain knowledge and competency in psychological research methods and statistics. You will gain practical experience of a variety of methods and analysis techniques as you work with qualitative data and research design.  

Influential Studies in Psychology

Develop a critical appreciation of the most influential studies in psychology and gain background information on the development of psychology as a field. You will learn to develop arguments, debate, and critically evaluate research as you explore historical and contemporary issues in psychology.  

Social Psychology and Individual Differences

Deepen your knowledge and understanding of core topics within social psychology and individual differences. You will learn of the complex interplay between typical social phenomena and individual differences within those phenomena.  

Empirical Project

Explore empirical research in psychology by designing, undertaking and reporting your own research project. You will be introduced to key activities for research as you gain generic and transferable skills.  

Development across the Lifespan

Cognitive and Behavioural Psychology 

Optional modules

Evidence-Based Treatments across the Lifespan

Study interventions for psychological and neurological conditions from clinical experts in the field. You will examine a range of disorders and their treatment as you develop an understanding of evidence-based practice.  

Placement 

Work with an established researcher to further your understanding of a particular area of psychology, and tackle practical issues in research. You’ll use the skills you’ve acquired on your placement to produce a report on your activities and what you have learned.   

These are the modules that we currently offer for 2024/2025 entry. They may be subject to change as we regularly review our module offerings to ensure they’re informed by the latest research and teaching methods.

New UK/Republic of Ireland students: £12,800

New international students: £30,950

Tuition fee information

Careers

As a graduate of this course, you will be qualified for further training to become a professional psychologist. Our MSc Psychology Conversion degree is accredited by the British Psychological Society and grants you the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership.
