Choose PGCert in Language Assessment at the University of Reading

  • Learn from world-class experts in the field. Gain knowledge from leading researchers in the Department of English Language and Applied Linguistics and benefit from the expertise of British Council researchers and practitioners.
  • Delivered in partnership with the British Council. The programme is delivered in collaboration with the British Council, a globally recognised leader in developing and implementing language assessment since the 1940s.
  • Intensive summer delivery. This 12-week programme comprises six weeks of immersive on-campus learning (full-time), followed by six weeks for work on assignments at your own pace.
  • Advance your career. Enhance your professional credentials, expand career opportunities, and build your professional network of peers and experts in language testing and assessment.
  • Gain master’s level credits. Successful completion of the programme will give you 60 master’s level credits to use towards the MA TESOL or other related postgraduate degrees.

Taught by leading scholars and language assessment experts, the course equips you with advanced concepts, specialised language assessment techniques, and a wide range of transferable skills, connecting theory with practice in real-world language assessment settings.

You will develop assessment literacy skills and gain theoretical and practical insights into how tests are designed, evaluated, and implemented, enhancing your professional testing credentials and global employability.

This course is designed and delivered in partnership with the British Council Assessment Research Group. Our academic team are active researchers and scholars, many of whom are experienced language assessment professionals working as teachers, consultants and policy advisors.

Their research and practice directly inform the focus and content of your course, providing you with opportunities to learn through a variety of contexts and media to develop knowledge and skills in language testing and assessment.

Our experts will mentor you in how best to develop and complete your language testing project.

Your learning environment

We offer an excellent staff to student ratio across our modules, and you will receive individual project supervision. Our teaching is interactive, practical and discursive, delivered through a mixture of lectures, tutorials, project supervision meetings and group work.

You will also undertake some self-scheduled teaching and learning activities, designed by and/or involving staff, as well as guided independent study. This will give you plenty of opportunities to develop your academic skills.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements: We usually require a first or second class undergraduate honours degree, with at least 57% in modules related to Linguistics/ English language. Those with other qualifications and relevant work experience may also be considered.

IELTS: 6.5 overall with no element less than 6.0 (or equivalent).

Our Pre-sessional English Programme is for international students who need to meet their degree programme English language requirements.

Our courses equip you with the skills and language needed for academic success, including critical thinking, self-reflection, learner autonomy, research skills and integrating sources. The Pre-sessional English Programme is accredited by the global association of Lecturers in English for Academic Purposes, which guarantees you will receive a high-quality student experience.

Language Testing Principles

Familiarise yourself with the basic concepts, issues and methods of language testing and their importance in educational, professional, employment and immigration fields. Evaluate key characteristics of good language tests and the usefulness of different tests for educational and non-educational purposes. You’ll gain the skills needed in your professional career, as a language teacher and/or a tester, to identify and employ suitable tests and assessment practices.

Language Assessment in Practice

Develop the key knowledge and skills required to assess different aspects of language in language teaching and other contexts. You’ll focus on the assessment of individual language skills (reading, listening, writing and speaking), integrated skills, such as listening to writing, and language knowledge components/systems, including vocabulary and grammar. You’ll discuss practical aspects of language assessment such as rating scales, rating descriptors and item analysis, as well as explore some aspects related to the use of generative AI for language testing purposes.

Language Testing Project

Build on the knowledge and skills acquired to focus on the key concepts of test evaluation, design, validation, development and post-administration analysis. Get familiar with the key stages of evaluation and design processes, with the opportunity to evaluate an existing language test or design parts of one. You’ll acquire the skills needed in your professional career as language teachers and/or tester designers, to identify, evaluate and use existing tests or to develop new tests and assessment practices.

Careers

The PGCert in Language Assessment is designed to prepare you for a range of careers requiring specialised testing and assessment knowledge. You will gain the ability to solve practical problems in educational and assessment contexts, enhancing your professional testing credentials and global employability.

The programme will also provide you with the knowledge and skills needed to continue to study for an MA in a relevant area, such as our own MA TESOL or MA Applied Linguistics.
