Our MSc by Research Biomedicine is an exciting course and will provide you with broad research training to prepare for a career in biomedical research.

This course is also suitable in preparation for subsequent PhD studies and for students planning a research career in industry or academia.

You will spend your first semester undertaking a number of taught modules to prepare you for your research project. This includes a research skills module in which you will gain hands-on training in advanced techniques such as confocal microscopy, flow cytometry, cloning, in situ hybridisation and bioinformatics.

You will then choose research projects to pursue for the rest of the course in areas such as cancer biology, cardiovascular disease, stem cells and regenerative biology, microbiology and genetics.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements: Normally a good undergraduate honours degree (2:1 or above), or equivalent from a university outside the UK, in a related subject such as biomedical sciences, biological sciences, biochemistry or microbiology.

IELTS: 6.5 overall with no element less than 5.5 (or equivalent).

Pre-sessional English language Programme

Our Pre-sessional English Programme is for international students who need to meet their degree programme English language requirements.

Our courses equip you with the skills and language needed for academic success, including critical thinking, self-reflection, learner autonomy, research skills and integrating sources. The Pre-sessional English Programme is accredited by the British Association of Lecturers in English for Academic Purposes (BALEAP), which guarantees you will receive a high-quality student experience.

Compulsory modules

Project Planning, Laboratory Skills and Experimental Design

Discover biomedical research techniques for academic and commercial applications, enabling you to research, plan, design and execute a research project. You’ll learn what makes a good research project and which methods to employ.

Critical Analysis and Problem Solving

Use your skills and knowledge to solve a scientific problem. You’ll discover the latest developments in biomedical research, learn how to critically evaluate it, and apply lab techniques to propose a solution.

Research Project

These are the modules we currently offer for 2024/25 entry. They may be subject to change as we regularly review our module offerings to ensure they're informed by the latest teaching and research methods.

Please note that the University cannot guarantee that all optional modules will be available to all students who may wish to take them.

New UK/Republic of Ireland students: £12,800

New international students: £30,950
