Art education expert awarded National Teaching Fellowship

Dr Suzy Tutchell, Associate Professor in Art Education (Institute of Education), has been awarded a National Teaching Fellowship by Advance HE, recognising her outstanding contribution to teaching and learning in higher education.

The award celebrates individuals who have demonstrated excellence in teaching and made a significant impact on student outcomes and the wider profession. Each year, only a limited number of fellowships are awarded across the UK higher education sector. 

Suzy's award recognises her long-standing commitment to creative, inclusive and socially just approaches to education. Since joining the University, she has led art education pathways and convened modules across undergraduate and postgraduate study, supported doctoral researchers and contributed to teaching enhancement and student experience initiatives.

Throughout her career, Suzy has championed the role of art as a tool for enquiry, empathy and social change, encouraging students to explore identity and belonging through creative practice. Her work is grounded in the belief that creativity can foster understanding, empowerment and positive change, both within education and beyond.Alongside her teaching, Suzy has advanced equity, diversity and inclusion across the University.

As School Director for Racial Equity and Justice, she contributes to work addressing awarding gaps and supports the University's commitment to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for all students, including as a University of Sanctuary.

The Fellowship also recognises Suzy's wider leadership in initial teacher education, academic tutoring and postgraduate research supervision, as well as her influence on teaching and learning across the sector.
