Public invited to explore University Learning Garden

Members of the public are invited to discover the University of Reading's new Learning Garden, as it throws open its gates for a free open day on Saturday 19 September.

Visitors are welcome to drop in any time between 11am and 3pm, with no need to book in advance.

Located within the historic walled garden in the Harris Garden on the University’s Whiteknights campus, the Learning Garden was formally opened in June 2026. Restored and rejuvenated as part of a £1 million investment, the Learning Garden is a new outdoor education space designed to support learning about climate change, biodiversity and sustainability.

The garden will not be publicly accessible at all times but will support the education of school pupils, University students and community groups through dedicated bookings.

As part of the open day, University staff will be on hand to answer questions and help bring the garden to life, alongside partners Freely Fruity and the Tree Council, who will be running activities and talking about their contributions to the space. 

Kirsty Shakespeare, Engagement Project Manager (Climate and Environmental Sustainability) at the University of Reading said: "The Learning Garden reflects the University’s commitment to environmental and climate education. It's a space designed to help people of all ages understand the environmental challenges we face and feel inspired to take action of their own.

“We're looking forward to welcoming the local community along to this open day, where they can explore the garden, meet the team behind it, and enjoy a beautiful corner of our Harris Garden."

Entrance to the Learning Garden is via the Harris Garden, with signposts marking where to go. Compost toilet facilities will be available on site throughout the day.

A centenary legacy

The opening of the Learning Garden is a part of the University’s centenary celebrations in 2026 and has been made possible through a combination of University investment and the generous support of donors to the University’s Centenary Fund. Fundraising for the garden is still ongoing and donations can be made online.

The new outdoor learning space forms part of the University's Nature Park scheme and since its launch, the garden has already welcomed almost 1,800 school pupils through a successful pilot programme. The University is now inviting schools and community groups to book visits for the 2026/27 academic year.
