RED Global Engagement Award

An opportunity to gain awareness of the wider world with the purpose of becoming more globally engaged while developing your employability skills

The Reading Experience and Development (RED) Global Engagement Award is one of the University of Reading’s Official Skills Awards.  It is an opportunity for those currently studying at the University of Reading to gain awareness of the wider world, with the purpose of becoming more globally engaged.  On achieving this award you will be able to demonstrate your awareness of being globally engaged, which many companies are actively seeking, whilst committing to making the world a better place for all.

The Global Engagement Award has been designed to be flexible around your studies and you can choose when to complete it.  You are also able to transfer 10 hours of activity to or from this award between the other two University of Reading Skills Awards (RED Award and RED Sustainable Action Award) if the activity is relevant for those awards.

How do I complete it?

To successfully achieve the Award you will need to complete 40 hours of activity across two components (Global Awareness and Global Actions), with a minimum of 10 hours of activity in each individual element.  You will then demonstrate how you feel you have become globally engaged and challenged pre-conceptions you previously held (Global Understanding) before reflecting on your experience.

'So what counts as Global Engagement?'

Global Engagement is a broad term that could cover a range of different areas. For the purpose of this award we define this term as any learning, activity and/or reflection that demonstrates the social, political, environmental, and economic actions of being a globally minded individual in order to support the world to be a better place.  We are looking for you to take up opportunities to build your knowledge of other cultures and global issues, whilst taking action to become more globally engaged.

Throughout Semester 1, Careers will run the ‘Introduction to the RED Awards’ sessions. This session is not compulsory but as well as providing some options of what you can get involved with, we will also give you an overview of all of all the skills awards available to you and what the next steps are for you to start completing the awards you want too. You can book your attendance for this via MyJobsOnline.

What would I need to do?
