Eligible Activities For RED Global Engagement Award

To complete the Global Engagement Award, you’ll need to earn at least 25 points by completing a range of globally and culturally focused activities. Points are allocated based on the activity's level and time commitment - the more time and effort required, the more points the activity is worth.  

If you are new to the award but have already completed some of this activity, you can backdate anything you have done since you started at the university!

Here are some eligible activities to get you started: 

Note: There is some flexibility in how activities are categorised. If your activity doesn’t clearly fit into a listed section, just choose the closest match and use the reflection box in your RED Global Engagement Award pathway to explain your submission. 

Point Activity
 Point Description
One-off Volunteering - One day or less Volunteering of one day or less with global/international focus. You can find Volunteering Opportunities at Latest Volunteering Opportunities, Reading Voluntary Action's website, or sign up to RSU's One-Off Volunteering Opportunities newsletter. 
Careers Fair Attend a Career fair and scan your card at the entrance to prove your attendance. This must have a global/international focus to qualify. 
RED Session Attend a RED session, online or in person. 
Global Study Lounge Conversation Cafe - 1 session only  Attend 1 Conversation Cafe session. If you have attended 3 or more sessions, please complete the 'Global Study Lounge Conversation Cafe - 3 or more sessions' activity instead for 5 points. 
RSU Event
Attend a Reading Student Union (RSU) event with a Global Engagement focus.  
Careers Event recording  Watch the recording of any careers events you missed to earn one point. 
Duolingo  Learn a Language on Duolingo. You can claim only 1 point regardless of how many hours/how long your streak is.  
Careers & Employability Sessions - 1 session only  Attend 1 careers session bookable via MyJobsOnline. If you have attended 3 or more sessions, please complete the 'Careers & Employability Sessions - 3 or more sessions' activity instead for 5 points. 
Intercultural Competence Workshops - 1 Session only  Attend one session of the Intercultural Competence Workshops. If you have attended 3 or more sessions, please use the 'Intercultural Competence Workshops – 3 or more sessions' activity to log your points. 
Academic Language Webinar  Attend at least one Academic Language webinar run by the Academic English programme. Please note these webinars are open to all international/EU University of Reading students from campuses in the UK and beyond (e.g. Malaysia and South Africa)  

Point Activity
Point Description
Global Study Lounge Conversation Cafe– 3 or more sessions Attend at least 3 Conversation Cafe sessions.
STaR Mentoring Become a STaR Mentor, attend the training and mentor first year students. There needs to be an international focus to this activity to qualify, for example mentoring an international student.
Henley Part 4 Mentoring - 3 or more sessions Henley Business School Part 4 mentors for placement students – for the five points students need to attend at least 3 sessions in a mentor capacity and there needs to be an international focus.
Student Representative Serve as a Student Representative. There needs to be an international focus to this, for example representing international students.
Volunteering/Paid work - short term and one-off roles
Short-term or one-off roles via Campus Jobs and other paid opportunities. To qualify, there needs to be an international focus to this activity, for example participating in events that support the Global Academy.
Thrive Mentoring Participate in a Thrive mentoring partnership. Available to UG and PGT students, HBS students not eligible (HBS has their own mentoring scheme you can use for this activity instead.)To qualify, you must show that your mentor is in a role that reflects the aims of the Global Engagement Award.
Society Committee Member Serve as a Society Committee Member. To qualify, please show how your involvement and the remit of the society is globally/culturally engaged.
Online and in-Person Training with Global /International focus Training submitted must be more than one hour, or an accumulation of multiple courses. These must be extra-curricular and not part of your degree. Examples include: LinkedIn Learning, Open Learn, United Nations System Staff College. Only training with a global/international focus (broadly defined) are eligible.
Intercultural Competence Workshops - 3 or more sessions Attend Intercultural Competence Workshops. You will need to attend at least 3 sessions to qualify.
Academic English Programme In Person Course Attend Academic English Programme In Person Course. These courses are open to all international and EU University of Reading students, including those from our UK campuses as well as campuses abroad (e.g. Malaysia and South Africa). Offerings include Spoken language courses and our Discipline-specific courses.

Point Description
Volunteering – Regular and sustained Attend regular and sustained volunteering. You can find Volunteering Opportunities at Latest Volunteering Opportunities or Reading Voluntary Action's website. The volunteering must have a focus on Global Engagement, for example volunteering for a refugee charity.
Work experience (including internships) Work experience, including internships and longer-term Campus Jobs opportunities such as regular part-time work. Excludes in-curriculum placements. To qualify, the experience must have a focus on Global Engagement.
Future Learn - Living in a Connected World: The Challenges and Opportunities of Global Citizenship Living in a Connected World: The Challenges and Opportunities of Global Citizenship. To get free access to this course, you need to sign up for a student account through the UoR website: Future Learn
Global Graduate Modules The Global Graduate Modules.
Language Learning This activity must be accredited through a programme of study, for example the extracurricular language modules through the Institution-Wide Language Programme (IWLP or Future Learn), an accredited external language course or the British Sign Language Course.
