What is changing?
The shape of the academic year
A new academic year model will be implemented from September 2024, changing from three 10-week terms to two 15-week semesters. This will improve how courses are organised and assessed, as well as improving opportunities to study abroad or go on international placements.
An overview of the semester model is below, or you can view the new academic year model in more detail.

Changes to modules and assessments
The introduction of clear and simplified programme and module principles has enabled changes that reduce the complexity in how we organise and deliver our programmes. This means students are offered the right amount of choice and a well-designed timetable and that expectations are consistent.
Aligned with these changes, a key piece of work has considered the way we assess students, with a focus on ensuring the right amount of assessment is spread out appropriately and designed to allow students to demonstrate their knowledge in a way that is valuable for real life and professional contexts.
We have acted upon student feedback that it can be more difficult to choose options early in their first year and consequently, all modules in Semester 1 of Part 1 will be compulsory, except where there is the option to take a language module in the first Semester.
Digital learning enhancements
Alongside the changes to modules and assessments, we will continue to promote and support the effective and creative use of technology to enhance teaching and learning.
Teaching will primarily continue to be in person and provided alongside well-designed and purposeful digital activities and resources. This reflects our aspirations of being inclusive, respecting diversity, enabling participation and removing barriers.
