Early Career Researcher development opportunities
17 September 2024
It’s Postdoc Appreciation Week in the UK and Ireland (16 – 20 September 2024).
We have a thriving and diverse community of over 290 postdoctoral researchers at Reading, spread across almost all our Schools and disciplines.
The Doctoral & Researcher College's support for early career researchers continues to evolve and this year will include inductions for new staff, promotion workshops for researchers at Grade 6, coaching through Henley Business School and opportunities to work with Entrepreneurs in Residence over the coming year.
The University is also a signatory of the Researcher Development Concordat, which sets out the employment conditions required to create the very best culture for research staff to thrive. It has three defining principles, covering Environment & Culture, Employment, and Professional & Career Development.
Professor Parveen Yaqoob, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation), said: “Our early career researchers are fundamental to contributing to our research across the arts, humanities and sciences, helping to address global challenges and tackling issues of societal importance.
“I’m very pleased that the Doctoral & Researcher College is continuing to develop the support on offer to this community of staff, importantly taking forward actions to demonstrate our commitment to the Researcher Development Concordat.
“Taking advantage of the principles in the Concordat, such as staff taking a minimum of 10 days a year for their professional development, is vital for continued success. We must support staff to take this time to enhance and further their careers and develop into the research leaders of the future”.

Coffee morning: meet your fellow postdocs
The Doctoral & Researcher College would like to show its appreciation to all our postdocs by inviting them to an informal coffee morning to mark the day.
It’s an opportunity for early career researchers to meet their peers and find out about the development opportunities on offer at Reading. The event takes place in the Common Room at Old Whiteknights House, 11:00 – 12:00 on Wednesday 18 September.
