Early career researchers win awards
10 May 2024
Awards have been presented to early career researchers following talk and poster competitions at this year’s Early Career Researcher (ECR) Conference.
Our early career research community came together last month for an inspiring afternoon hearing about the range of research going on at Reading and the unexpected career journeys of a range of senior researchers, both in academia and industry, including Dr Fiona Marston, Royal Society Entrepreneur in Residence.
Professor Adrian Williams, Dean of the Doctoral & Researcher College, said: “It was great to see so many take part in the conference and meet others outside of their day job.
“Our panel of senior researchers highlighted the importance of following your research passions and exploring links with partners outside of academia, to not be afraid of change or be too risk averse, to help to grow your career.
“Our early career researchers are our research leaders of the future, and it is vitally important that we support them and build the right culture from the start of their career journey.”
Colleagues who attended valued the opportunity to network with other researchers face to face to initiate new collaborations and take time to reflect on their own career paths.

The Doctoral & Researcher College ECR competitions were established to showcase the breadth and depth of research undertaken by early career researchers at the University of Reading and to create an annual opportunity for ECRs from all disciplines to network outside of their discipline.
This is part of our ongoing commitment to the Concordat for Research Development Concordat for Research Development, supporting the environment, culture and professional development of our ECR staff.
All early career researchers can check out the Research staff webpages for useful information during your contract.
Alternatively, contact Sue Glover, Researcher Development Project Officer, or contact the Doctoral and Researcher College, if you have any queries – from employment to environment and culture to training and professional development.
