Staff Network updates – all-staff talk video available
15 May 2024
This month’s all-staff talk was a chance for colleagues to find out more about the University’s diversity and inclusion and professional development staff networks.
Vice-Chancellor Robert Van de Noort welcomed Chairs of the networks to share updates on their recent activities and priorities and aims moving forwards.
Speaking during the session were:
- Tahlia-Rose Virdee (LGBTQIA+ Network Co-Chair)
- Dr Anna Ziomek (Women@Reading Network Co-Chair)
- Julia Farwell (Women’s Springboard Network Co-Chair)
- Aleiah Potter (BAME+ Allies Network Co-Chair)
- Professor Yota Dimitriadi (Disability+ Network Chair)
- Professor Sarah Jewell (Parent and Family Network Co-Chair)
Our staff networks have more than 1,000 members collectively – indeed 51% of those who responded to the audience poll during the session were members.
The network chairs and members work to promote diversity and inclusion at the University, and organise lively events throughout the year to allow members to socialise, hear from external speakers and learn more about topical issues and support resources. The Women's Springboard Network helps women who have completed the national Springboard programme to continue their professional development and benefit from peer support.
Information about the networks, their Microsoft Teams channels, and instructions on how to join each of them, can be found on the Staff Networks webpage.
More information
Questions submitted by colleagues in the Q&A during the session included information on how to set up a new staff network. Colleagues can submit proposals to Allán Laville, Dean for Diversity and Inclusion, via diversity@reading.ac.uk or email Allán for an informal conversation.
The network chairs were also asked about allyship. Most welcome allies as members, while training on being an effective ally is available to all colleagues on UoRLearn, including a Bi Inclusion Training session this Friday and a BAME+ Allies Network Padlet board with allyship tips.
The issue of aggression towards certain groups was also raised. Our Report and Support service can be used by any colleague who witnesses inappropriate behaviour, such as harassment. Our Estates Security team can also be contacted on 0118 378 7799, or email security@reading.ac.uk to arrange a chaperone service on campus if you feel unsafe.
