Ramadan prayer space being provided on campus
05 March 2024
A marquee will be available for prayers for staff and students observing Ramadan this month.
The University’s Estates team and Reading Students’ Union have again provided the marquee next to the Muslim Centre (Archway Lodge - Building 37 on Whiteknights campus map).
The space will be available for prayers inside and outside of normal working hours. They will include separate spaces for men and women to pray.
Due to planning authority conditions, this space will only be open to our staff and students.
To accommodate the marquee, the parking spaces next to the Muslim Centre, and the access road leading to them from Queen’s Drive, will be closed during Ramadan.
About Ramadan
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. It follows the lunar calendar, starting when the first new moon of the month is sighted over Mecca. This is why the dates for Ramadan change every year, in a similar way to Easter.
This year, Ramadan starts on the evening of 11 March and runs through to Eid on 9 April.
Ramadan is observed by Muslims worldwide, who fast from dawn to sunset and pray several times a day during the month.
