Opportunities to stand for election to Senate
24 April 2024
Eligible colleagues can now put themselves forward to stand for election to the University’s Senate.
Following a review of the Senate in July 2022, categories of membership for the Senate have been changed. There are now two categories of membership for colleagues from the Teaching & Learning (T&L) and Research communities – there are five vacancies in the T&L category and five vacancies in the Research category from 2024/25 for a period of three years.
Senate is established by the Charter and is the University’s main academic administrative body. Reporting to the Council, the Senate meets 3-5 times a year. The Senate comprises members of UEB, Deans, Heads and elected representatives of Schools, colleagues from the T&L and Research communities, as well as Reading Students’ Union Officers and elected students. The University Boards for Teaching, Learning and Student Experience, Research and Innovation, University Executive Board, and Global Engagement all report to the Senate.
The opportunity is open to academic colleagues (Grade 6 and above) on Teaching Intensive, Teaching & Research and Research Intensive contracts including: Heads of Department, T&L and Research Deans, School Directors of Teaching and Learning, School Directors of Academic Tutoring, University Teaching Fellows, Lecturers, Associate Professors, Professors, Research Division Leads, Post-Doctoral Research Assistants and Research Grades 7, 8 and 9.
If you would like to stand for election to the Senate, please submit a short manifesto of no more than 250 words, including in which category you would like to stand, to Louise Sharman, Head of Governance, at l.v.sharman@reading.ac.uk. The manifesto should detail relevant skills and experience, the reasons you would like to join the Senate, and the contribution you think you could make. Nominations must be received by 16:00 on Friday 26 April 2024.
We warmly encourage colleagues who identify from underrepresented communities to apply.
If you have any queries about Senate, please contact Louise.
