Major incident training modules
11 January 2024
Power cuts, floods, fires and other unexpected incidents all have an affect on our campus operations and our staff and students.
The University has a Major Incident Plan (MIP), which is followed when such an event occurs and sees a Major Incident Team (MIT), made up of senior leaders, Health and Safety and other colleagues with relevant knowledge, mobilised to keep us all safe and find solutions.
While some colleagues are more likely than others to be involved in an MIT, any one of us might be called upon to assist with responding to an incident. It is therefore important that all colleagues are familiar with the MIP and how to activate it.
Emergency planning training
To support colleagues to better understand the MIP and their possible role within in, a range of e-learning courses has been developed and are available on UoRLearn.
These can all be completed online and in your own time and are tailored to colleagues in different roles.
- Activating the Major Incident Plan
This is useful to all colleagues, but especially those working out of hours or on emergency call out who might need to make the decision to declare a major incident. It helps colleagues to recognise the types of minor incidents that can escalate to become major ones, and who to notify to mobilise an MIT. - Major Incident Team Support Officer (MITSO) training
This module is aimed at Executive Support Officers & Senior Governance Officers who would support an MIT. It explains the purpose of the MIP and the role of support officers in helping it run smoothly. - MIT Training for MIT attendees
For Heads of School/ Directorate/Function and other colleagues who might be asked to attend an MIT. The module outlines the role of an MIT attendee, where to find the MIP, how it is activated, the importance of sharing information, and how the MIT structure can be tailored to the situation. - MIT Training for MIT deputy attendees
Aimed at colleagues who report to Heads of School/Directorate/Function and who might be asked to attend an MIT as a deputy. It outlines key information about the MIP and what responsibilities they are likely to have to pick up. - MIT Training for strategic leads
For UEB members and their direct reports. The module explains the role of the Strategic Lead following an incident, including how to decide whether to activate the MIP and who should be invited to an MIT.
