VC Statement: "We will never tolerate harassment and racism”
05 August 2024
The horror of the attack on children in Southport left me shaken and deeply shocked, and so too has the racist and Islamophobic violence that has followed. And I have had contact today from colleagues who share that horror.
It is critical in a modern democracy that citizens can raise concerns, debate issues of societal importance and express differing, even unpopular, views. Indeed, this lies at the very heart of what we are here to achieve as a University, and we have many experts who regularly contribute to public discourse and debate.
Never, under any circumstances, can differences of view, however strongly held, justify violence and hatred. Disagreement is no excuse for discrimination, harassment or bullying. I want to reiterate in no uncertain terms that here at the University of Reading, we will never tolerate such behaviour. Indeed, I’m hugely proud that when conflict and hostility have occurred locally and globally on other occasions, our University community has responded with compassion, care and attempts at mutual understanding even in the most difficult circumstances.
My thoughts are with all those whose lives have been affected by the events here in the UK, and by violence elsewhere, including over the weekend in Bangladesh. If you need support, please do seek out the services that are here for you. University staff can speak to a Wellbeing Peer supporter or their line manager and access other support by visiting our Staff Wellbeing Hub. Students can contact the 24hr Support Line on 0800 023 2466
As a University, we remain deeply committed to principles of freedom, solidarity and compassion. It needs those of us who vehemently oppose intolerance and hatred to stand up and make our views and our compassion visible, and to speak out against the increasingly loud voice of intolerance.
If you are ever a victim of, or witness, any form of discrimination, harassment or bullying on campus, staff, students and visitors can report this using our online tool. Please submit a report with contact details if you want to be contacted and receive personal support. If there is any immediate danger to yourself or others, contact 999 immediately.
The University’s 24-hour campus security team will also enhance their already visible and reassuring presence on our campus.
