New fire alarm alert system in Miller and Art buildings
21 August 2024
Colleagues and students with hearing impairments can now get fire alarm alerts to their mobile phone in the Miller and Art buildings.
A new Digital Messaging System (DMS) has been installed in the two buildings to ensure users who cannot hear the existing audible alarm are aware when they need to evacuate.
Stickers have been placed next to the entrances in the buildings, allowing anyone to activate the alerts on their phone. This can be done via an app or on the website.
The solution was developed over several months by the Health and Safety team, working with colleagues in the buildings. They discussed the local requirements and investigated how best to address this need.
The system may be rolled out in other buildings, according to need. It continues work to improve the accessibility of our campuses as part of strategic development led by Estates and Health and Safety.
How to use the system
- Text 07480486966 or scan the QR code on the blue sticker next to entrance to the building – or use the image in this article. You only need to do this once to register.
- Choose how you want to be alerted, including via text message, voice message, WhatsApp, email or via the FireCo app if you choose to download it.
- Activate alerts for the buildings you use.
Alerts can be turned on and off for individual buildings, depending on when you are in them. Or alternatively you can leave the alerts on at all times.
Leaving alerts on at all times means you will be alerted to fire alarms, including the weekly drills, even when you are not in the buildings. However, it means you don’t need to remember to activate them every time you enter the building.
The system stores your phone number and email address (if provided) and these details are not used for anything else.
