Geography programmes receive accreditation
30 August 2024
Nine undergraduate Geography programmes at Reading have been accredited by the Royal Geographical Society with the Institute of British Geographers (RGS-IBG).
This accreditation recognises the high quality of teaching and learning in Geography at the University and is an important endorsement for attracting students in future years.
The accredited programmes are BSc Geography (Human), BSc Geography (Physical) and BSc Geography (Human & Physical). Each of these programmes is also available with Professional Experience or Study Year Abroad options, all of which have received accreditation.
A team of colleagues spent six months putting together our application to be ratified by the RGS-IBG Council, which had to demonstrate excellence in a range of areas, including the quality and breadth of our programmes, diversity in teaching and assessment style, rigorous processes for quality assurance, and employability.
The recognition earned from the RGS-IBG demonstrates that these programmes meet the high standards set out in the 2022 QAA Subject Benchmark Statement for Geography.
Dr Stuart Black, Head of School for Geography and Environmental Science, said “It is fantastic news that our excellent programmes have been recognised by the RGS-IBG through this accreditation and shows the hard work and professionalism of all the staff in the department."
The University of Reading joins 10 other UK higher education institutions in this round of accreditations, reinforcing its position as a leading provider of geography education.
More information about the accredited geography programmes is on the Department of Geography and Environmental Science website.
