‘Violence ends with dialogue’ – support during conflict
20 October 2023
A joint update from the Vice-Chancellor and Students' Union President on supporting each other in response to ongoing conflict in the Middle East
The news from Gaza and Israel remains grim. As an internationally connected community and a global University this affects us all, but clearly there are those in the Reading community who feel the pain especially keenly, particularly those with personal connections to Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories.
This week, around 50 students and colleagues from across the University accepted our invitation to an informal discussion at the Students’ Union. At the event, we discussed what we can do as a community to support each other, and how we can act as individuals and collectively to help those in need.
We were encouraged that so many people came together to talk in a constructive and respectful manner, despite differences of opinions and perspectives.
Importantly, we can resolve together to support each other, and not to compound the suffering of anyone in our own community. Ultimately, violence is only ever ended with dialogue.
As we discussed at the meeting, such appalling events can leave us feeling powerless to act. But there is much that we can do:
- Students and colleagues wishing to give towards humanitarian efforts to help civilians can donate to organisations such as the British Red Cross, which works with local partners already in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories – or to other reputable aid agencies.
- We should speak up and use our expertise to provide others with the context and history to help them understand what is happening, and why. Inclusive, constructive discussion is crucial. And while academic freedom and freedom of speech are the lifeblood of our University, we must remember that what we say can have an impact on our students, colleagues and others.
- We will seek to establish new groups through the Students’ Union, led by students, so that students of all faiths and backgrounds can find relevant avenues for support. If you’d like to know more, or have any suggestions, please email enquiries@rusu.co.uk
- All students, staff and visitors to the University deserve to be treated with respect. Anyone experiencing or witnessing harassment or discrimination can report it online, and get help, via Report and Support.
- Anyone feeling unsafe or threatened on campus can access Security Services 24 hours a day. Speak to any security officer, visit the security control room at Whiteknights House, or telephone 0118 378 7799 or 0118 378 6300.
We remain committed to keeping discussions going, and we are thankful to all those who are turning to help others with compassion and respect.
