Online programmes to be offered in new partnership
17 May 2023
Plans for the University of Reading to provide online distance learning programmes are moving forward after an agreement was signed with global online education provider, Cambridge Education Group (CEG) Digital.
A select range of online PGT programmes will be offered through a platform called Reading Online to complement our on-campus full-time offering.
CEG is a trusted partner, delivering Foundation programmes for the University. CEG Digital already offers online programmes on behalf of several UK universities, and it has a wealth of data on market trends in addition to its extensive experience in online provision.
Work is already under way with a number of Schools, including Henley Business School, the Institute of Education and School of the Built Environment, to identify suitable Master’s programmes, with a view to releasing a small portfolio of online provision in 2024. Other Schools will get involved over time.
Growth opportunity
The partnership with CEG Digital is set to last 12 years and aims to see the development of 10 programmes in the first three years. These will be identified selectively, in order to develop a carefully managed and focused portfolio which can attract a high volume of online learners. Programmes will align with the Portfolio Review Pathway principles.
This initiative is one of a number of innovative ways we are exploring to grow income while minimising the additional workload for colleagues and limiting the load on our existing physical and digital resources. Reading Online will reach students in growth areas around the world who are unable to access the campus physically, allowing the University to reach a wider and more diverse market and compete in the online learning environment in a targeted way.
Under the partnership, CEG Digital will lead student recruitment to Reading Online, support Reading academics with development and delivery of online materials and play a key role in the provision of day-to-day student support and advice. All programmes will be delivered under the University of Reading name, brand and ethos. Final degree awards will be made by Reading.
Reading Online will have multiple entry points during each academic year, meaning learners do not have to wait until September to begin their studies.
The project is being led by Professor Peter Miskell, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education & Student Experience), and involves a wide group of colleagues including those in the involved Schools, CQSD, DTS, Student Services, RISIS, Global Recruitment and Admissions, and Marketing Communications & Engagement.
