University Teaching Fellowship applications open
06 March 2023
Colleagues who champion excellent teaching will be recognised for their work as the 2023 University Teaching Fellowship scheme opens for applications.
A University Teaching Fellowship is a prestigious award for colleagues who have demonstrated individual excellence, and made a significant contribution to the development of teaching and learning at the University.
University Teaching Fellows play an active role in the development of teaching and learning practice at the University.
Only a small number of people are granted the accolade each year, which is awarded for life.
The scheme, overseen by the Centre for Quality Support and Development (CQSD), is open to all teaching and teaching and learning support staff at the University.
Advice from the 2022 cohort
Elizabeth Conaghan (School of Law) and Angela Buckingham (CQSD) both became University Teaching Fellows in 2022. Here is their advice for anyone considering applying this year.
Angela said: "I would absolutely encourage interested colleagues to have a go at applying for a University Teaching Fellowship: it’s such an affirming and empowering award to receive - and within your department and across the University it’s a real recognition of the importance of Teaching and Supporting Learning at Reading.
"It’s not a quick and easy process, and you have to be prepared to reflect deeply and to write concisely, as well as steeling yourself not to succeed on the first go because it’s a competitive scheme.
"One of the best things for me is having the opportunity to join the University Teaching Fellowship Community of Practice, a wonderful group of like-minded practitioners who love teaching."
Elizabeth said: "I was really delighted to join this wonderful community of practice and to be able to hear others' experiences of teaching and innovation.
"I would recommend drafting an application and asking a University Teaching Fellow to review it with you prior to submission; this process helped me enormously and ultimately led to a successful outcome."
