Join us for the Running Out Of Time Relay
30 June 2023
Colleagues are invited to celebrate a climate action relay passing through campus by joining some staff activities on Friday 7 July.
The Running Out Of Time Relay is again visiting Reading as thousands of participants carry a baton across Britain in a display of support for climate action and nature.
The Palmer Quad on Whiteknights campus will host local dignitaries, visiting meteorologists and staff as the baton arrives onto campus.
Colleagues are invited to join the celebration by:
- Gathering for a group photo with the baton at 13:00.
- Joining a short walk around campus, led by the baton, starting at 13:15. The walk will pass by the sites of current and future development related to our climate and sustainability ambitions.
- Cheering off the runners on the next stage of the baton’s journey at around 14:00.
The University hosted a Relay event in November 2022 as the baton was carried towards COP27 host city Sharm El-Sheikh in Egypt.
What is the Running Out of Time Relay?
The Running Out of Time is the biggest sporting celebration of climate action ever attempted in Britain.
The Relay began at Ben Nevis in Scotland on 10 June and will finish 2,661km later at Big Ben in London on 11 July, having travelled through 50 cities across 366 stages.
Throughout this time thousands of runners, walkers, wheelers and cyclists will carry the baton, in a call for the nation to take collective action to reach net zero.
Reading stage
The runner bringing the baton to campus, from Reading School, is Dan Thompson, the founder of the Running Out Of Time Relay.
For the departing leg, a growing group of colleagues in the Department of Meteorology and the Institute of Education will take the Baton down to Green Park.
The group represents the work done by colleagues in those departments, and others across the University, to improve climate education in the UK. Find out more on our Partnering for the Planet website.
