Volunteers wanted for child speech and language observations
04 July 2023
Colleagues with toddlers are being asked to help train the speech and language therapists of the future.
Speech and Language Therapy students at the University observe a toddler in a home setting as part of their studies. Each year, around 60 local families with a toddler participate in the programme.
Students gain a better understanding of child development, and have the chance to practice talking with parents. This is excellent preparation for later in their training, when the students will meet children in clinical situations.
Families that take part also benefit, with previous participants reporting that they have really enjoyed having the students come and visit them.
Colleagues that wish to volunteer should:
- Have a child born between February 2022 and September 2022
- Live in an area accessible by public transport for students
- Be willing to invite a student into their home for six to eight visits over roughly one year
For more information or to volunteer your family to take part, please contact Lesley Young, Placements Administrator, on sltplacements@reading.ac.uk by September 2023.
