Full pay award to be implemented in August
21 July 2023
Colleagues will see their pay rise from August as the remainder of the 23/24 pay award is implemented.
The 2023/24 pay award is between 5% and 8% in total, depending on where colleagues sit on the University’s salary scale. Our lower-paid colleagues will receive a higher total percentage increase, as shown on the table below.
As part of this year’s agreement, colleagues were exceptionally awarded a proportion of this pay rise (£1,000 or 2% per annum) in March, backdated to February. This was in recognition of the current cost of living pressures on staff. The remainder of the pay award will be implemented in August.
For more information on the pay award and the early uplift, see our Staff Portal news story.

Supporting colleagues on lower pay
The structure of the pay award which provides a higher percentage increase for colleagues on lower spinal points again reflects the approach taken over recent years by UCEA in the pay negotiations to support colleagues on lower grades.
In addition, the University’s incremental pay progression arrangement means many colleagues will progress onto the next spinal point during the coming months. Qualifying Grade 1-5 colleagues will progress in August, while Grade 6-8 colleagues will progress in October.
This pay award was negotiated by the Universities and Colleges Employers Association (UCEA), who conduct collective pay negotiations on behalf of most UK universities.
Universities do have the option to defer the payment of the award by up to 11 months, however the University Executive Board chose to implement at the earliest opportunity, in March and now August, to support colleagues.
Campus Jobs workers have also been awarded a pay increase this year, either due to April’s National Minimum Wage rise or as part of an annual review in August.
