Start-up funding for Teaching and Learning Projects
20 February 2023
This year’s Teaching and Learning Enhancement Projects (TLEP) Scheme, overseen by the Centre for Quality Support and Development, is now open for applications.
Based on the belief that small projects can be significant catalysts for enhancement and improvement, the scheme offers start-up funding of between £500 and £2,500 to encourage and enable staff to experiment with new ideas and develop practice across any area of teaching and learning. The scheme is open to all staff involved in teaching or supporting teaching and learning.
Please visit the scheme page to view the criteria and guidance and to access the application form. The deadline for applications is 17:00 on Wednesday 12 April 2023. Funding will be made available to successful projects from 1 August 2023.
Update on last year's projects
Last year’s winning projects are currently underway. Here is what two of the project leads said about their successful applications, and the impact of their work to date.
Exploring the Hidden Curriculum – Supporting Student Transitions into University and Sense of Belonging
“Our project is a student-staff partnership with a group of first-generation students currently in their second and final years of study in the Law School. We have been working on how to demystify the experience of being a Law student and building a community. To do this we have co-created a glossary for new students to help explain the language of higher education, explaining some of the acronyms, key terminology such as the difference between a lecture and tutorial and formative and summative assessments, who to contact for help and finding your way around useful websites. This glossary was shared with all new students in the Law School, and student partners are currently helping to evaluate its impact.
"We have also made a "Top Tips" video with the student partners sharing their advice for how to succeed as a law student. The other focus of our partnership work has been bringing to fruition the students' ideas for building a community, which has led to regular film nights, an International Culture Day celebration, pizza party and tea and chat sessions with staff. We have future plans to run a whole day session after exams to create some further resources to share with future years and evaluate the project. We are due to share our work at the July Advance HE Teaching & Learning Conference."

Co-constructing and evaluating the climate and sustainability education national framework across programmes at the Institute of Education
“The project has enabled the IoE to look closely at a range of ways we can implement the Climate Change and Sustainability Initial Teacher Education (ITE) Framework. We have utilised the funds to facilitate workshops with Reading International Solidarity Centre (RISC) on climate justice. Furthermore, student insight into the teaching of climate change and sustainability education has been captured with a pre- project survey. It is encouraging to note that trainee teachers want to gain further knowledge and understanding in this important area. We look forward to disseminating the final outcomes of the project, once all aspects of the project have been completed.”
Dr Nasreen Majid, Institute of Education
