Emeritus Professor John David Maitland Wright

We very much regret to announce the death of Emeritus Professor John David Maitland Wright, who passed away on Monday 7 August 2023.
John was appointed Professor of Pure Mathematics at Reading on 1 January 1971, aged 28. He was later appointed the Head of the Department of Mathematics, a position he held from 1980 to 1984 with an additional year from 1992 to 1993, before retiring.
During his time at the University, John took many absences of leave to attend conferences in Germany and gained valuable experience from time spent at the University of Paris.
Prior to joining Reading, John graduated with first class honours from University of Aberdeen in 1964. He then moved to Oxford and obtained his doctorate in 1967.
He was awarded the Oxford Senior Mathematical Prize and Johnson Prize for his thesis on measure theory, before being elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1978.
Funeral arrangements
John's funeral will take place on Thursday 14 September, starting at 11:30. Reading colleagues who wish to attend are welcome to.
