Apply for pilot scheme using research to tackle local issues
03 October 2022
Early career researchers with a commitment to engaging with communities are being sought to work on a pilot scheme aimed at bringing about positive local change.
Researchers who are either currently working on their PhD or completed it in the last 8 years (allowing for career breaks) can apply for one of 5 paid positions through the British Science Association (BSA).
The Community Led Research Pilot is being run by the University, the BSA and community groups. It will work with groups in Reading and Slough who are new to or underrepresented in research and help them use science to better understand issues that matter to them.
The successful researchers will work with and involve members of the community to develop broadly science-based research projects that address local priorities, through discussions, workshops and events.
The role reflects the University’s strategic principle of engaging with our community beyond campus and making a positive difference to people’s lives.
Dr Sally Lloyd-Evans, Public Engagement with Community Research Fellow at the University of Reading, who will lead the research, said: “This exciting new project will take a participatory approach to delivery and decision-making within local communities in Reading and Slough.
“It will allow community researchers to bring their lived experience, skills and knowledge to the project and to develop and deliver research ideas linked to science that are relevant to the local area.”
Prior scientific knowledge or community or participatory action research skills are not essential as training will be provided. Applicants need only a commitment to connecting with communities.
The developed research projects will be fully funded by UK Research and Innovation.
