Trans Day of Remembrance flag-raising invitation
11 November 2022
A Transgender Day of Remembrance flag-raising ceremony will take place on campus on Friday 18 November from 11:45-12:15.
The University is again marking the day, which takes place internationally on 20 November each year and is an opportunity to honour those who have lost their lives in acts of anti-trans violence.
All colleagues, students and members of the community are welcome to join the flag-raising ceremony at the Whiteknights campus flagpole (between Whiteknights House and Edith Morley). Colleagues and students from across the University will also give speeches.
Members of the trans community are significantly more likely to be a victim of crime. According to the Office for National Statistics, 28% of trans people in England and Wales experienced crime in the year ending March 2020. This compares with 14% of people whose gender identity is the same as the sex they were registered at birth.
