Expressions of interest invited for Race Review-related work
13 May 2022
Colleagues are invited to submit an expression of interest for a forthcoming discussion related to our Race Equality Review.
The review recommended that we explore whether there is support for investigating the University's links to colonialism and slavery, and the discussion is a first step in that direction.
As you are aware, many organisations undertaking similar work take the ‘review and report’ approach and, in some cases, publicly acknowledge and address the findings.
Our own approach, as outlined in the Race Equality Review, is to involve colleagues and students in deciding whether and how to explore this issue. As such, this discussion will consider the :
- ‘review and report’ approach and action taken at other universities
- key questions for University of Reading to consider when exploring its own history, and
- recommendations on the process for consulting colleagues and students about exploring the University’s links with slavery and colonialism.
This is an in-person event and will take place on Friday 17 June (11.00-12.30). Deputy Vice-Chancellor Parveen Yaqoob and the Dean for Diversity and Inclusion Allan Laville will chair the event.
If you would like to participate and contribute to the discussion, please outline – in no more than 250 words – why you are interested and what active contribution will you make to the discussion.
Your expression of interest must be submitted by 29 May to Sinead O’Flynn (s.oflynn@reading.ac.uk).
Places will be allocated based on a clear articulation of experience, interest and a desire to contribute to the debate regardless of personal opinion on the matter.
You will then be invited to join a number of other colleagues who have been invited for their relevant academic expertise.
