Reading suspends Russian partnership
11 March 2022
The University is suspending its strategic partnership with the Moscow State Institute of International Relations, MGIMO.
Vice-Chancellor Robert Van de Noort has written to the Rector of MGIMO to suspend the partnership, following a statement by the Russian Union of Rectors on 4 March expressing support for the invasion of Ukraine. The University reiterated its condemnation of the Russian invasion.
The University will continue to seek to support its students, of all nationalities, who have already embarked on joint programmes of study, and continues to offer support for all its students who are facing a range of practical, welfare and financial difficulties.
Reading is committed to academic freedom and freedom of speech, and will continue to forge international partnerships, which are built upon a trusting and open collaboration and exchange of ideas.
Professor Van de Noort also highlighted to MGIMO’s rector that several hundred University of Reading staff, students and alumni have signed a petition in support of those MGIMO graduates, academics and students who had written an open letter to President Putin, opposing the Russian invasion.
