Celebrating International Women's Day
08 March 2022
Today we reflect on the continuing journey to women’s equality as we celebrate International Women’s Day and consider this year’s campaign theme #breakthebias.
Whilst some progress has been made, such as gender stereotypes being challenged, an increasingly diverse representation of women in the workplace, and the movement away from women having to succeed in a ‘man’s world’, it remains the case that there is still a need for more progressive mindsets and inclusive behaviour. There needs to be a recognition that there is still gender bias at play (be it conscious or unconscious) and that collectively, everyone can strive for women’s equality by calling out stereotyping, discrimination and bias.
Now, in 2022, we expect inclusivity, and this is championed via movements like #MeToo and #TimesUp and the rise of International Women’s Day activities around the world. Gender-related conversations and activity are on the rise. The stereotypical patriarchal ‘male’ role in society grows ever more varied and gender roles become more fluid. The world now "expects" diversity, equity and inclusion, notices its absence and celebrates its presence.
We must all step up and be aware of the significant impact that bias (both conscious and unconscious) has on women's equality. We need to recognise it and call it out. We need to #BreakTheBias.
