Calling for Honorary Degree Nominations
29 March 2022
Honorary graduates are an important part of the University of Reading community and provide us with an opportunity to recognise the achievements of society’s most outstanding people. Any current student, alumni or member of staff can make a nomination for an honorary degree.
We award different types of degree including Doctor of Science, Doctor of Letters, Doctor of Laws and Doctor of Business Administration.
All nominations are considered by the Joint Standing Committee of Senate and Council which routinely meets once a year in early June.
Criteria
When considering who to nominate and why, it is important that your nominees fit one of the three criteria:
- Academics who have made an exceptional contribution in teaching, research, public understanding of research or innovation in their academic field; or
- Colleagues, former colleagues and alumni who have delivered exceptional service or contribution to the University or the broader public; or
- People who have made an outstanding contribution to the University, or have had a positive and significant impact on the local communities where the University operates, in the UK and abroad.
Exceptionally, we may also consider nominees who, through their extraordinary achievements, can serve as a role-model for the University’s students and graduands.
Our work on social equality is all-embracing. We're committed to ensuring that we are a welcoming University for our diverse and inclusive community and this will be reflected in our awarding of Honorary Degrees.
