Supporting Earth Hour at the University
25 March 2022
Earth Hour takes place every year between 20:30 and 21:30 on the last Saturday of March, with individuals and organisations turning off lights as a symbol of commitment to our planet. This year the Estates team will be supporting by adjusting the University’s building management controls to turn off all non-essential lights on campus buildings.
First started in 2007 by the World Wide Fund for Nature to raise awareness of climate change, Earth Hour is now one of the largest environmental grassroot movements and is celebrated in over 190 countries.
Sustainability at the University
The University is committed to being a leader in environmental sustainability and playing our part in tackling climate change, and this applies as much to managing our resources on campuses as to our cutting-edge climate research. Towards this goal we have already:
- Exceeded our target of a 45% reduction in carbon emissions by 2021
- 17.6% reduction in waste per person
- Met our five-year target for 60% recycling rate for July 2021
- Been awarded a £3.4million grant by Salix Finance to further reduce our carbon emissions by an estimated 816tonnes
Please consider joining us by switching of your own lights at home and work.
