What is your role on Council?
As a non-employee and non-student member of Council, I represent an independent perspective to the governance matters and decisions reached by the Council. I am also a member of the Student Experience Sub-Committee which focuses on the student journey and perspective.
What is a good thing about being a member of the University Council?
Being a member of Council has given me the opportunity to give back, I have volunteered throughout my career and really enjoy being part of a group that is for the overall good of the University. I have met some amazing fellow members who have impressive backgrounds and career histories.
What is most challenging about being a member of the University Council?
I became a member of Council during the pandemic. This posed a challenge since all meetings were virtual, I also had to get to grips with the University’s complex governance structure while attending all meetings remotely. Another challenge, is the changing landscape of education and the economic environment over the next few years means that the University Strategy has to continue to be agile.
What are you passionate about regarding the Council or the University Strategy?
As a practicing solicitor and chartered governance professional I am very passionate about governance and compliance matters, as such, being a lay member of Council provides me with perfect opportunity to utilise my professional background as well as pursue my personal interests.
What has been your single biggest learning during your time as a Council member?
Other than the governance structure it has been the extensiveness of the University’s structure, with its impressive museums, libraries and grounds, which I was able to appreciate following a tour of the Whiteknights campus.
