Expressions of interest: decolonising curriculum work
12 July 2022
Following the publication of the Race Equality Review (2021), Dr Al Laville established the Decolonising the Curriculum (DtC) Working Group in January 2022. This working group was tasked with creating an institutional vision for DtC and to create a resource booklet to support colleagues in this process.
The Phase 1 work focused on decolonising teaching content, teaching methods and assessment methods.
To ensure the student voice was present within this work, the membership of the working group includes students and RUSU representatives. The working group has also collaborated with the Inclusion Consultants in Student Services to ensure examples of best practice from the student perspective are included.
We are very pleased to share that the working group has now completed the Phase 1 objectives with the publication of the DtC resource booklet set for the 5 September 2022. The DtC resource booklet includes question banks, case studies, FAQs and reflections on recommended reading and viewing. You can read more about the work so far through this link.
In Phase 2, the DtC Working Group will be focusing on the following themes:
- Theme 1: Inclusive Teaching and Learning spaces including effective student-staff partnerships.
- Theme 2: Decolonising research.
The working group will be creating resources to support colleagues in both of these thematic areas. We will meet on a termly basis with the provisional dates set for:
- Thursday 13 October 2022: 10am – 11.30am [Theme 1]
- Friday 17 February 2023: 10am – 11.30am [Theme 2]
- Friday 19 May 2023: 10am – 11.30am [Planning for publication and dissemination]
Between meetings, we will be creating the resource booklets for each theme and ad hoc meetings might be scheduled.
If you have an interest and / or previous experience in either of the two themes, please send an Expression of Interest to Al Laville (allan.laville@reading.ac.uk) of no more than 200 words detailing how you hope to contribute to the working group.
Deadline for the expressions of interest is 29 July 2022.
