Women@Reading: Upcoming events
26 January 2022
The Women@Reading Network provides a forum for discussion of issues of importance to women, their equality allies and champions.
The Network, which is around 200 members strong, aims to ensure that all women working at the University are empowered to fulfil their potential, while also aiming to support and challenge the University in achieving its sex and gender equality related aims (such as ensuring sex and gender parity in leadership roles across the University, equity in opportunities and treatment and reduction of the Gender Pay Gap).
The Women@Reading Network Steering Group, informed by the members of the Network, also organise an annual programme of events open to all colleagues, with topics chosen to reflect issues important to women in particular.

Imposter Syndrome – What is it and how can I overcome it? Those who experience Imposter Syndrome often believe they are inferior to others or have faked their way into positions despite impressive accomplishments. Up to 70% of both women and men, especially high-achievers, experience Imposter Syndrome at some point in their career. This false belief system can lead some people to self-sabotage, turn down career or personal growth opportunities, and limit their own career trajectories. This one-hour, guided session, led by People Development, will explain the different types of Imposter Syndrome and share constructive ways you can begin to overcome this negative thought cycle.

These are in addition to other events to be held to mark International Women's Day on Tuesday 8 March, this year’s theme is #BreakTheBias. Keep an eye out on the Staff Portal for details.
The Network is also currently working on several initiatives;
1. Developing the Network to engage with a wider constituency of women who work at the University. We are mindful that our Network needs to appeal to and work for colleagues with different life experiences.
2. Working more closely with other Networks and RUSU to collectively make the University a better place to work and study.
3. Increase the number of our Gender Allies and explore the benefits of reverse-mentoring to help educate and provide better awareness of issues relevant to women, which are sometimes not obvious to someone of a different sex and/or gender.
4. Working in collaboration with HR, People Development and Occupational Health to develop a broader range of practical resources and tools to help better signpost staff and line managers in relation to managing and better understanding aspects of Women’s Health – with a focus on the Menopause, Endometriosis and Period Pain and in relation to Domestic Abuse.
5. Collaborating with external partners, such as Berkshire Women's Aid to help support and inform colleagues and to host topical events.
