Fairtrade Fortnight: 21 February to 6 March 2022

Fairtrade Fortnight sees thousands of individuals, companies and groups across the UK come together to share the stories of the people who grow our food and drinks, mine our gold and who grow the cotton in our clothes, people who are often exploited and underpaid.

Fairtrade is about social, economic and environmental justice. Choosing Fairtrade fights for improvements in producers’ livelihoods with collective strength through co-ops and their bargaining power, the protection of a Minimum Price and Fairtrade Premiums. 

The University will be supporting Fairtrade Fortnight will the following events.

Tuesday 1 March:

• Tony Talk: Can Chocolate be Free from Slavery?

Time: 13:00-14:00 

Venue: Chancellor's, room G12

Speakers from chocolate company Tony's Chocolonely will talk about their company's mission to eradicate slavery in cocoa production.

There will be free chocolate for all attendees!  

• University Chaplaincy is open for drop-ins for a free pancake with Fairtrade toppings. 17:00-19:00  

Throughout:

• 20% off all Fairtrade hot drinks at Campus outlets when paying on a Campus Card
• Co-op Supermarket will be showcasing their Fairtrade product range

This year, Dr Sarah Cardey, Director of the University’s Graduate Institute for International Development, Agriculture and Economics is supporting the Fairtrade Foundation's national campaign. “The Fairtrade Foundation has highlighted in this year’s campaign how better wages can improve resilience to climate change amongst smallholder farmers and producers. This is a campaign that I can easily and proudly support, as my research has demonstrated this to be the case around the world”.

Nationally, online events will also be hosted as part of the “Choose the World you Want Festival”. Last year’s festival included over 50 online events, from panels to bake-offs, with supporters sharing the power of Fairtrade. More details: https://www.fairtrade.org.uk/
