All-staff session on 'Expectations and Workload Pathway' – video available
08 June 2021
The work of the Expectations and Workload Pathway of the Strategic Foundations Programme was the focus of the all-staff briefing on Friday 4 June.
Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation) Dominik Zaum, who is leading the pathway, joined Vice-Chancellor Robert Van de Noort for the session.
The Strategic Foundations Programme has emerged from the work carried out as part of our Post-COVID-19 Response Programme to respond to the immediate financial challenges posed by the pandemic. It is a five-year programme which will deliver changes gradually to enable us to engage colleagues in the process and manage the transition for everyone effectively.
Introducing the session, Vice-Chancellor Robert Van de Noort said, “Addressing workloads and how we work is really a urgent issue. The work that Dominik is leading is not just about workload but it is also about expectations, which really is very much around how can we ensure the excellence of our education and research that we identified in the University Strategy as a key characteristic of the University of Reading in the future.”
In his presentation, Dominik spoke about the two separate pieces of work on workload-related questions – the first of which is a Working Group along with UCU and Staff Forum (established as part of Phase-1 of the Post-COVID19 Response Programme) to identify barriers to more balanced workloads; the second came from the Phase-2 discussions last year around setting clear expectations for teaching and research for academic staff and establishing workload models that enable the achievement of these expectations.

You can access the video directly on Microsoft Stream.
Questions from the session have been shared with the Expectations and Workload Pathway project team and will be incorporated into the work of the project.
The next all-staff session is on Wednesday 16 June at 11:00 and will focus on what the forthcoming Government announcement on COVID-19 restrictions mean for our University’s plans for the coming months. All colleagues will be sent an Outlook Calendar invite ahead of the session. If you have any queries, please contact communications@reading.ac.uk.
