HR update on pay freeze
12 July 2021
During summer and autumn 2020 the University engaged in extensive consultation with the UCU and the Staff Forum on ways to mitigate the financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the University. Agreement was reached on a number of measures, you can see the final agreement here. As agreed during the collective consultation period, regular review of the University’s financial position is continuing involving representatives from UCU and the Staff Forum.
Earlier this year we were able to confirm that the pay cuts that had been previously proposed would not be applied. However, at the recent review meetings on 24 May and 8 June it was acknowledged by UCU and the Staff Forum that the proposed pay freeze does remain necessary.
The agreement for a pay freeze covers the cost of living element for the years 20/21, 21/22 and 22/23. There was no nationally agreed cost of living element in 20/21 therefore this element of the agreement is being implemented now ahead of the 21/22 arrangements. The agreement does not cover incremental progression which will continue to apply.
All colleagues will shortly receive a letter confirming that the pay freeze will apply for the years 21/22 and 22/23. Colleagues at Grades 6 and above do not need to take any further action, as UCU, the recognised trade union for these staff, has already agreed to this contract change. For colleagues at Grade 1-5, the letter will confirm the process by which acceptance of this change is required.
Further reviews with UCU and the Staff Forum are being scheduled.
