Local GPs and Dentists

Find out how to register with a local GP and dental surgery

Doctors appointments

You will probably be spending most of your time in Reading over the next few years, so it's important to have a local doctor available to you. That way you can receive emergency care if you need it, and access health services quickly and easily – something that is especially important if you have an ongoing health condition.

What is a GP?

Your local doctor is called your GP.

'GP' stands for General Practitioner. A GP is a doctor who treats all common medical conditions and refers patients to hospitals and other medical services for urgent and specialist treatments. A GP is normally your first point of contact when seeking medical advice, treatment or a diagnoses.

You will need to register with a GP surgery to book an appointment with a GP. A GP surgery is a healthcare facility, that offers a range of health services including vaccinations, GP and nurse appointments, routine check-ups and minor surgical procedures.

How to register with a GP surgery

Anyone in England can register with a GP surgery to access NHS (National Health Service) services. It's free to register. Check out the NHS website to find out key information on how to register with a GP.

Dentist appointments

In the UK, dental care is offered through both the NHS and private dental practices.

You can get dental treatment on the NHS to keep your teeth and mouth healthy. You will usually need to get cosmetic treatments privately.

You can get NHS dental care by making an appointment at an NHS dentist. Most adults need to pay for their NHS dental appointments and treatment. You can find out more about NHS dental treatment costs on the NHS website. Some people are also entitled to free NHS dental care, find out if you are eligible.

If you have a private dentist, treatment costs will vary depending on the clinic.
