Answers to questions you may have about module selection.

How do I select my modules?

If you are required to select optional modules for your programme, you will receive email communications from the Module Selection team informing you that you need to do this and by which date.

You must select your modules on RISIS.

The Module Selection FAQs may help with any specific information you need.

    Please note:
Some modules have a limited number of places, and you are not guaranteed a place by submitting your module choices. If you are not successful in gaining a place, the Module Selection team will email you asking you to select an alternative module (see “What happens if I am unsuccessful in gaining a place on my preferred module”).

When you make your selections, please ensure that you save your choices and press submit. If you fail to press the submit button, your choices will not be submitted and you will not be considered for a place on your selected modules.

Some Schools send out alternative module selection information, but this is usually communicated to students ahead of their module selection period by Support Centres or Programme Directors.

Where can I see which modules are offered?

You can find the list of optional modules available for your programme via the RISIS portal.

    -  Log into RISIS
    -  Select 'Information' from the top menu bar
    -  Select 'Programme and Modules'
    -  Click on 'Your module selection’

When online module selection opens, you can view your module options via the module browser on RISIS.  The browser allows you to look at the different modules offered on your programme.  Once you have decided your module selections, you can then proceed through to the student module selection screens.  The module selection portal will list your compulsory modules and you will have access to select your optional module choices.  Once you have made your module selection, you must submit your choices.  We will notify you via email to confirm your module selections.

How many credits do I need?

As a full-time undergraduate student - you must have a total of 120 credits per part.

How many credits is each module worth?

The majority of modules are worth 20 credits, although projects or dissertations may have a higher credit value. Each credit equates approximately to 10 hours of work (including all contact hours such as lectures or classes, as well as further reading and any assessments).

When choosing your modules, please make sure that you register for the right number of credits and optional modules each academic year. This information is available when you make your selections online), and this includes the compulsory modules for your programme and any required pre-requisites or co-requisites for the modules you are taking.

Can I change my modules after you have selected them?

Requests to change your optional modules should be made as soon as possible, or until the Friday of Semester 1, week 2 at 12:30 hrs (UK time) (for modules taught in Semester 1 and Semester 1/2) and until the Friday of Semester 2, week 2 at 12:30 hrs (UK time) (for modules taught in Semester 2). Please email moduleselection@reading.ac.uk with details of your requested changes.

You may request changes to your optional modules, however please note that you do not have an automatic right to change your optional modules. Consideration will be given as to whether you have the necessary pre- and co-requisites, whether there are places available on the module and whether the deadline for changing optional modules has passed.

For more information on changing your modules, please see our FAQs.

Where can I get help choosing my modules?
